When: March 6th 2013, 7pm - 830pm
What: Lecture: Solar Responsive Design: How Does Your Space Stack Up? A building cannot be sustainable if it is not energy efficient, and it cannot be energy efficient if it is not solar responsive in its design. Such a building will try to include all of the following features: orientation, color, window placement and size, shading, passive solar heating, day-lighting, active solar hot water heating, and photovoltaics. Since it makes sense to "pick the low hanging fruit first", these features should be incorporated into a building in the order presented above. Mr Lechner will lead a lively discussion in basic solar design principles, leaving attendees with a sense of how to design a new home or building for optimal energy performance working with passive and active solar design components, as well as how to analyze pre-existing structures for possible solar design retrofits. There will be a brief Q and A at the end of the lecture.
